Toronto Public Library – Lilian H Smith

Our scope of work for the Lilian H Smith renovation project included designing a new Learning Centre (computer lab) as well as a new Staff Work Room. Also included in our scope was a full Library Master Plan to help TPL organize for future renovations at the branch.

The design of the Learning Centre intervention responds to the existing building both in terms of geometry and materiality. Wood fins and glass panels were used to encourage visibility into the Learning Centre and establish directionality toward the existing central atrium. The wood species (white oak) was used in reference to the existing wood species used elsewhere in the building, however, when assembled with glass and a contemporary colour palette, it creates a fresh and modern aesthetic for this part of the library.
